“One of the strongest values I’ve held throughout my adult life is the need to rebalance humanity and nature.”
For ten years I worked as Head of Sustainability in Brighton, and I burned out. I moved to Cornwall for a deeper connection with nature, wildlife and the sea, and steadily found a calling to support sustainability professionals through coaching and retreats.
After rebalancing my own life, I now bring a wealth of experience to sustainability consultancy work.
I’ve come to realise that key to that is being a true generalist. My career spans nearly 40 years and across freelance, private, voluntary, charity, public and social enterprise sectors with sustainability the recurring theme.
I’ve worked as a print and radio journalist, in wildlife and nature conservation, grants and project advice, European programmes, tourism and economic development, creative industries strategy, partnerships’ development and support, report writing and presenting, policy development and project management work.
I am a blogger, writer and presenter and facilitator. I’ve lectured on Entrepreneurship in the Public Sector at Warwick Business School, presented at national conferences, chaired wildlife organisation boards, been an adviser to the Sustainability Commission and on the Expert Panel for BioRegional, the independent sustainability organisation.
And while I now work mainly as a coach, mentor and retreat leader, I love variety in my work and doing more focused sustainability consultancy.

Work and Projects

Thurstan Crockett
Former Head of Sustainability in Brighton
I led work at Brighton & Hove City Council to secure the world’s first One Planet City status from independent sustainability experts, Bioregional; and worked to secure the city region’s successful bid for UNESCO World Biosphere status in 2014 – the first new designation in the UK for nearly 40 years. I secured widespread backing – resulting in July 2014 consent – for a big new wind farm off the Sussex Coast, E.On’s 116- turbine “Rampion” wind farm.
I wrote much of, and edited, Brighton’s multi partner One Planet Living Action Plan, and reported on delivery to both council and external groups. I set up and co-ordinated the City Sustainability Partnership and worked closely with Labour, Conservative and Green Party- led administrations, including the Greens’ first in Britain. I helped establish the city’s successful Food Strategy and Partnership.
